History: | The 'Hill' was originally 60 feet higher than it is today and was comprised of three separate peaks. The peak in the center was named Sentry Peak. In 1634, the residents erected a mast with an iron bucket of tar which could be set afire to warn the populace of enemy approach, thus prompting the name to change to Beacon Hill (MA-T36). |
